Search to Contribute

I participated in an information literacy session this morning for incoming graduate students in the College of Veterinary Medicine.  The faculty member that arranged the session stressed to the students the value of effectively searching research databases for their immediate benefit, but also looking forward to the future.  She noted that scholars contribute to field of knowledge within their discipline.  As a researcher, you have an opportunity to learn from the searches that you conduct; paying attention to the controlled vocabulary that is being used within a relevant database.  In the future, you should ask yourself how will someone retrieve my article?  What search terms do I need to use in order for someone to find my article?  What journal titles are peer-reviewed, but also respected by experts in my field?

I thought that was an excellent point.  Learn to view research from two perspectives: one of the researcher and one of the contributor.  One perspective will enhance the success of the other and vice versa.
