Hey, hey you... I need you

Library on Demand
This session concentrated on adding a library block (widget?) to the learning management system at the University of Alberta, which they compared to the home delivery of groceries (convenient and what you need [want] without having to scan the shelves).

I appreciated that they started off their session with a clear snapshot (Owston, York, and Murtha) of what blended learning is, in other words, what portion of class time is delivered online.

0% - traditional
1-29 % - web facilitated (use of CMS, posts online, syllabus, etc.)
30-79% - blended
80% + - online

They submitted a successful proposal to have the library block included in all classes as an opt in at the course level and at the student level as a default.  The library block includes links to Ask Library Staff, Find Books, Library Hours and Book Study Space.  On the course page, the block is customizable to include specific course resources.

So... 86% of student use was from desktop computers, 14% was mobile.
General survey of students revealed that 31% had used the block and 50% felt that it would be useful in other classes.  A survey of students who had been visited by a librarian revealed that 68% had used the block and a whooping 95% felt that it would be useful in other classes.

Considerations:
Internal training and instruction for all subject librarians and public service staff
External training for faculty and instructors and students (direct them to the block from the Moodle)
