Universal Design: A Shifting Framework

Ana Fierro presented her poster presentation on Universal Design: A Shifting Framework (abstract). When considering Universal Design, the design should be usable by all people, to the widest extent possible. The goals of Universal Design include wellness, social integration, personalization and cultural appropriateness. They should respond to different modalities of learning. For example, in online instruction you may use a combination of text, images and video to convey your content. You can add alternative text for the images, along with providing a transcript for your videos, thus making the content accessible by the majority of students. Further goals include expanding our understanding of what it means to design for accessibility, how educators can address the evolving diversity of students, and how can we designing environments that work for the greatest number of students.

The presentation also included information on the seven principles of Universal Design. The presenter shared a link to the slides for the session.
