Capitalize to Catalyze

Christine Walde (Grants and Awards Librarian) - University of Victoria
Getting the Grant to Catalyze Your Research Practice

-    grants can extend research beyond librarianship
-    motivate and inspire research, act as a catalyst
-    alignment of strategic direction for the university
-    push forward the idea of the librarian researcher: applicants for internal research grants, recognize the importance of the seed money, to the research and the dissemination of the results
-    dynamic learning opportunity as partners, participants, practitioners and as primary investigators (Christine refers to this as the rule of P)
-    "grants can make the difference between a staid career and one that marked by the kind of innovation and development that a cash infusion can catalyze" (Arlitsch 2013)
-    grant writing serve as a blueprint of the actual research work - Tasha - I think of this also in terms o applying for ethics
-    what are the considerations that need to be thought of when you are considering conducting research (time, research assistance, software requirements, ethics, funding, etc.)
-    articulate your passion
-    key takeaway: if you can't explain it simply to others, how will you go about conducting the research
-    can you extend the research in a meaningful way
-    communicate the value to your colleagues and to your institution

-    getting the grant is only the beginning....
